Ringtone apps and/or buying them through the iTunes store

Has anyone else played with the ringtone store found on the iPhones? I'm finding it frustrating because I don't see a search bar where I can just look through just ringtones. I'm looking for the Criminal Minds TV show theme. Are there any accessible ringtone apps? It's not that the iTunes ringtone store is inaccessible, but I can't search for the stuff I want, and when I click on genre and then soundtrack, I see a list of about 60 songs, but when I click on top tens and click on soundtrack, I can scroll through 100 songs. This is sort of confusing. Is this a user issue or is this an iTunes issue?
I'm asking 2 things. 1: Has anyone else had similar issues with downloading ringtones from iTunes? 2: If so, how did you fix them? Did you use different apps or....what? Thanks and sorry if this post was confusing.

I use ITunes for ringtones, not the ap store. If you go to search in ITunes, type in what you want, then scroll down, there is a section titled ringtones. It will have a few examples and then a button to view all the ringtones that match your search, click on that and it will show you a whole list.

I just found out about and downloaded an app called 1001 Ringtones. I haven't really played with it yet but someone on the VIPhone list said it's accessible. After you pay the 99 cents for the app, the ringtones it offers are free.

I use iRinger, if you want it, just google, it's for free
and I use CopyTransManager for transfering files like song and others
hope it helps

That's interesting because I just read that the only way you could buy ringtones in the iTunes store was through the phone. What version of iTunes do you have Silver Lightning?

I didn't mean to give the impression I was looking in the apps store for ringtones. I'm not. I'm actually going through the buy more Tunes button on my phone.

Ah, you might just try going directly to ITunes, its usually easier. If you like though, you can actually make your own ringtones pretty easily.

My only complaint is that there doesn't seem to be any way to redownload the tones you've purchased if you should lose them somehow. That happened to me this morning when I upgraded the software on my IPhone to the newest version. I suppose it's my fault since i never transferred those tones into my ITunes library itself but there should still be a way to download already purchased tones without having to purchase them again. And from my explorations there doesn't seem to be unless I'm just missing it.

I have the same problem, I lost my two ringtones that I had download. Luckily, I have both the songs they were made from, so I can just make them myself, and put them at a better position in the song.

I liked the ones I had. I'll buy them again if necessary (it's not like they're all that expensive). What I don't get is the fact that they show up in the ITunes Store in what it refers to as the Purchased playlist. Yet it doesn't seem to offer a means of moving them into a position were they could be transferred back onto the phone and into the proper folder to be used as ringtones again. I can play them though.

If you can play them, then all you have to do is change the file type and they'll be ringtones. Export them to your itunes folder, then change the file type to an R. That makes it a ringtone rather than audio. That should do the trick.

How do I do that though? And are you talking about the ITunes Media folder?

What I mean is there is a Ringtones folder within that folder with all the ringtones I purchased. They're in .m4r format. I assume that isn't the correct format despite the fact that Windows identifies it as a ringtone?

yep, .m4r is the ringtone file extention
